The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle® is Now a “Duel” Sanctioned Contest!
The Contest awards cash & prizes to teams competing in both the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned “DC Lottery BBQ Challenge” contest on Saturday and the Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) sanctioned “National Pork BBQ Championship” contest on Sunday. KCBS Categories: Pork, Beef Brisket & Chicken. MBN Categories: Whole Hog, Pork Shoulder & Rib.
Another exciting addition to the Contest this year is the introduction of the “Rancher’s Reserve Best Beef Contest”, being held on Saturday. Teams competing in this new category will receive complimentary Rancher’s Reserve Beef brisket to prepare, for judging in this special category. The highest scoring beef brisket entry using Rancher’s Reserve Beef will win $2,500 and be proclaimed “The Rancher’s Reserve Beef Champion” and will receive the title of “Best Beef in America”. “DC Lottery BBQ Challenge” – KCBS Sanctioned (Saturday)
On Saturday Teams cook off in the “DC Lottery BBQ Challenge”, sanctioned by KCBS and conducted under KCBS rules. Categories included: Beef Brisket, Chicken, Pork Rib & Pork (Shoulder, Butt or Picnic). The prize structure is as follows: 1st Place-$1,500; 2nd Place-$1,000; 3rd Place-$500; 4th Place-$250; 5th Place-$100. All winners including 6th Place will receive a trophy. The Grand Champion of the “DC Lottery BBQ Challenge” will win an additional $2,500 and guaranteed entry into the 2009 American Royal Eventin Kansas City Missouri.
“Rancher’s Reserve Best Beef Contest” (Saturday)
Teams competing in this special category will receive complimentary Rancher’s Reserve Beef brisket to prepare, for judging in this special category. The highest scoring beef brisket entry using Rancher’s Reserve Beef will win $2,500 & be proclaimed “The Rancher’s Reserve Beef Champion” and will receive the title of “Best Beef in America”. Please see the attached Official Entry Form to participate in this category.
“Nations Best BBQ Sauce Contest”
There will be a cash prize presented to the Team with the “Nations Best BBQ Sauce” at the awards ceremony on Sunday. 1st Place winner will receive $1,000 with trophies going to 2nd & 3rd Place.
“National Pork BBQ Championship” – MBN Sanctioned (Sunday)
Safeway’s Barbecue Battle has been declared, “The Official National Pork Championship” by the National Pork Board. On Sunday Teams cook off in the “National Pork BBQ Championship” sanctioned by the MBN and conducted under the MBN rules. Categories include: Whole Hog, Pork Shoulder & Pork Ribs. The prize structure is as follows: 1st Place-$1,500; 2nd Place-$1,000; 3rd Place-$500; 4th Place-$250; 5th Place-$100. All winners including 6th Place will receive a trophy. The “National Pork BBQ Champion” will win an additional $2,500 and guaranteed entry in the 2009 Memphis in May© World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
THE CONTESTS
1. Complete rules for competing in both the KCBS and MBN contests will be provided in the Team Acceptance Package to be mailed upon acceptance. Team load-in will begin at 10 PM Friday night prior to Saturday’s contest. Load-out will not occur until Sunday evening after 8 PM. Times subject to change, Contest Committee will make best effort to notify, prior to event, any changes in load-in/out times.
2. Teams may cook with any type of wood and/or charcoal. Other flammables (propane, compressed or liquid gas, etc.) may be used within the cooker ONLY to START the INITIAL fire. No type of flammable, other than wood or charcoal, may be used within cooker once the meat has been placed there. Flammables may be used outside and away from the cooker to make additional coals. Local fire and safety laws may prevent the use of any type of gas anywhere on the grounds at any time, and, if so, these laws prevail.
3. Electrical devices may be used within the cooker as long as they do not directly generate heat. Approved devices include rotisseries, fans & delivery systems for approved fuels. Electric smokers, holding ovens or containers or any devices with heat producing electrical coils are not allowed.
4. There will be four categories on Saturday: two Pork categories, plus Beef Brisket & Chicken; and three categories on Sunday: Whole Hog, Pork Shoulder and Pork Rib. Meat for both days of the contest must be cooked on-site at the contest from a raw state whether fresh or frozen. Meat for all categories may not be pre-cooked, sauced, injected, marinated, cured in any way, or otherwise pre-treated prior to the official meat inspection. Meat must be maintained at a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit prior to cooking, and at or above 140 degrees during & after cooking.
A whole hog entry is defined by the Sanctioned Contest Network as an entire whole hog, whose dressed weight is 85 pounds or more prior to removal of the head, feet and skin, and which must be cooked as one complete unit on one grill surface. No portion or portions of the hog may be separated prior to or during the cooking process.
A pork shoulder entry is defined by the Sanctioned Contest Network as the portion containing the arm bone, shank bone, and a portion of the blade bone. The pork ham considered to be a shoulder entry contains the hind leg bone. Boston butts or picnics which are not whole pork shoulders may only be used for Saturday’s KCBS contest.
A pork rib entry is defined by the Sanctioned Contest Network as the portion containing the ribs and further classified as a spare rib or loin rib portion. Country style ribs are not a valid entry.
5. Saturday judging of The D.C. Lottery BBQ Challenge will be blind judging only. Saturday judging times: Chicken 4:30 pm, Pork Ribs 5:30 pm, Pork Shoulder 6:30 pm, Beef Brisket 7:30 p.m.
6. Sunday judging of the MBN categories will involve blind & on-site judging simultaneously, as set forth in the rules of the MBN Sanctioned Contest Network. Sunday judging times: Whole Hog 11:00 am, Pork Shoulder 12:15 p.m., Pork Ribs 1:30 pm
CONTESTANT RESPONSIBILITIES
Each contestant competing shall supply ALL of his own meat, cooking ingredients, individual cooking devices (portable stoves, wood, or charcoal, etc.) utensils, preparation tables, etc.
The only thing provided to the contestants is a regulation size cooking area. All contestants MUST adhere to all electrical, fire, and other codes set forth in the acceptance packet.
WATER & ELECTRICITY
Water will be available in selected locations. You will be required to have in your area a bucket of chlorinated water for sterilization, please bring bleach for this. Do not dump Grey Water (Greasy Water) on the street, This Will Result in a Very Large Fine. If you need to order a waste tank or have a septic pump out, please contact us at 301-860-0630. A 20 amp, 110 volt electrical hookup will be available to each team at an additional cost of $150 per service.
ACCEPTANCE
1. APPLICATION: $375.00 entry fee required with submission of entry form. The $375 initial entry fee includes a 20' x 20' team space, entry in one Saturday KCBS sanctioned, D.C. Lottery Barbecue Challenge category, entry into the Best Sauce Contest, entry into the Rancher’s Reserve Best Beef Contest and entry into one Sunday MBN sanctioned, National Pork Championship Contest category. See attached entry form to enter additional categories, request more team space & to request electricity.
WE WILL ACCOMMODATE COOKING RIGS & TRAPPINGS BASED ON SPACE AVAILABILITY.
20' x 30' frontage or larger will be at discretion of the contest committee on a first come first served basis.
2. CHECKS should be made payable to Barbecue Battle, Inc. NO refunds will be made once your application is accepted. If your application is not accepted, a full refund will be made to you.
3. The DEADLINE to enter is May 15, 2008. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Due to limited space, all entries submitted are not guaranteed entrance to the contest. Enter Early!

4. Due to limited space, the Barbecue Battle Contest Committee has devised a procedure for selection of contestants for Safeway’s 2008 National Capital Barbecue Battle. The majority of spaces will be assigned on a first come first served basis. The remaining spaces are allocated on the following basis: Past Participants, Sanctioned Contest Winners, and Sponsors
5. Within one week of receipt of valid application, verbal or written acceptance / non acceptance will be given to designated chief cook. Acceptance packets will be mailed to each team accepted by June 1, 2008. At that time you will be instructed to complete the enclosed Acceptance Form. Each Chief Cook must sign and return the Statement of Understanding regarding rules, liabilities, regulations, and team responsibilities by June 15, 2008 to be fully entered in the contest.
THE BARBECUE STEERING COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO MAKE ADDITIONAL REGULATIONS AS THE SITUATION WARRANTS. ALL DECISIONS OF THE BARBECUE BATTLE CONTEST CHAIRMAN, COMMITTEE AND JUDGES ARE FINAL.
